Essay Topic Proposal:
My essay is going to be on smoking in films through time. I will be watching one film from before the 1964 'Report on Smoking and Health,' one from within ten years after, and then a film from the past ten years. I will then be analyzing the way smoking is portrayed, and the effects it portrays on the characters. I will specifically be looking for mental and physical traits shown, as well as whether or not smoking is given a positive or negative denotation.
I have yet to choose the two old films, but the current film I will be analyzing is Avatar. It will be an interesting thing to see how it has changed in time.
I think you have a very good idea and structure for this paper. You have a good idea here but now you need to get information and really grow on it. Smoking is a very big topic and you are going to find lot of information of it but your going to need to narrow down you research. I think it will work and you will have a great paper.
ReplyDeleteThis is a cool idea! So the movies are going to be your artifacts? I think that you can get a lot of info from these movies! you could used Breakfast At Tiffanys for one of your movies with iconic Audrey Hepburn always smoking. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteI think you have a great topic here. Iconic images of smoking are so vast in the older decades and now they are less prominent because of the medical statistics associated with smoking. I think its great that it ties in well with you last paper, about film and media; it’s a great spin off with lots of interesting things to talk about. I will be excited to see what you come up with because I think this will be a great cultural artifact as well as symbol to use in this paper.
