rough draft and citations! date rape

Date rape
Rough draft

Date rape is usually looked as a stranger jumping out at you and sexually assaulting you, or when a stranger slips something in your drink so they can sexually harass you.  What people don’t know or think about is that most the time date rape is by someone you know or who is very close to you. The real definition of date rape according to ASU website it sexual assault is an unlawful act that may involve the touching of intimate body parts, sexual intimidation, or forced sexual penetration. This includes sexual intercourse, oral sex, and digital penetration. Rape is forced sexual intercourse. Force may be by verbal threats, physical restraint, or violence. Stalking is defined as repeated, obsessive, fear-inducing behavior that makes the victim afraid or concerned for his or her safety.  There are many problems and positions when you think about date rape.  Date rape is something that happens everywhere but I am mainly focusing on date rape at ASU. Date rape is usually looked as a stranger jumping out at you and sexually assaulting you, or when a stranger slips something in your drink so they can sexually harass you.  What people don’t know or think about is that most the time date rape is by someone you know or who is very close to you.   Another thing we don’t realize is a lot of women call “date rape” because they don’t remember it happening, but the big question here is if we don’t remember it, is it automatically date rape?  Have you ever thought that maybe you drank too much that you became blacked out and had sexually relations with someone.  I know we all say well that still is date rape because I didn’t consent to it, but what you don’t think about is that you more then likely said yes while it was happening.  Sometime the guy and the girl are both blacked out and don’t remember it but yet the girl will press charges on the guy and say he raped her.  So the big question here is where is the line crossed and it’s actually date rape.   So my goal for this project/paper is to find out what date rape really is, and how we can define whether a situation was date rape or just a “drunken night” between two people.

The shame involved in either being battered by or hurting someone we care for makes it hard to tell anyone, even those closest to us. Acquaintance Rape also known as date rape is one of the most common among female adolescents and college students. Someone the victim knew commits about 60% of all reported rapes. (Warshaw, 11) The most common way to get into trouble is the idea of “you say no but you mean yes.” Since women are most often the victims of date rape, they must be firm in their response against sexual advances.   Women sometimes will say no but they know they want it so they say yes.  Later they then say it was rape if they relationship with the guy goes bad or something like this.  There is a wide variety of spokespeople, feminine activists, and community leaders who have been assaulted and now speak publicly on the issue of Date Rape. One victim, Katie Koestner speaks on a national level and has been featured on the cover of TIME magazine, appeared on Oprah, NBC, CNN and has been published in The New York Times and The Chicago Sun-Times.

Every two minutes, somewhere in the world, someone is sexually assaulted. Of these approximately 248,000 victims, about 87,000 were victims of completed rape, and 70,000 were victims of sexual assault. Up to 4,315 pregnancies may have resulted from these attacks.  This is not okay.  This is something that we need to change and we need to start thinking more about.  We don’t ever think that date rape can happen because it hasn’t happened to us. The victim doesn’t have to be a young beautiful Female, older woman, men and kids get raped to. The victims, rapists, and motivation can be very different depending on the one committing the crime. Date rape is a controversial and ambiguous crime.    Date rape is not a rare incident that only happens in isolated situations. In fact, surveys indicate that in 84% of rape cases, the victim knew the attacker, and 57% of rapes occurred on dates (Warshaw 11).  There are so many ways to look at date rape because you never know if there was actually consent or not?  Do you think that if alcohol is involved it’s far to assume that it’s actually rape or maybe they both wanted it and it was rape on both parts?  When it comes to date rape there are so many different possibilities    but I think when it comes down to it you can tell when something is really date rape or just a date night gone bad.

“About 3% of coeds are raped during each academic year. Over the course of 5 calendar years, including summers and vacations, 20-25% may be raped.
”(ASU website) When we think about the word “may” in this sentence it makes you wonder how could someone have maybe been raped.  This is because too many people will clam they were raped but in reality they just don’t remember it.  This has a lot to do with to many people getting to intoxicate.  I did a survey in one of my classes and out of the 35 people, 26 of them said that they have had a night were they have woken up in a guy/girls bed and have no idea who they are or how they got there or what happened.  Which Shows a lot and affects the amount of rapes that truly happen on ASU campus. One big problem with when people are truly raped is that they have no evidence of it because girls are too afraid to go straight to the hospital, so they shower and wash off all the evidence.  According to ASU website when you a re raped you should not shower, clean or wash up in any way, or change clothing before you go to the hospital emergency department. Doing so could destroy evidence (e.g., blood type, hair samples, etc.), which may not be legally acceptable if collected later than 72 hours after the rape. If you have removed clothes worn at the time of the rape, put them in a paper bag and take them with you to the E.R.  This is important information and we need to let more people know about it.  The reasons most rapes go UN reported is because women feel embarrassed and disgusted by it.  The blame themselves and think if people find out about it they will think they are gross.  Which isn’t true, if we don’t report the rapes the rapist will end up raping someone else.  We need to put a stop to the rapes but we also need to know the difference between actually rape and girls getting mad at guys and crying rape.   “3.3% of ASU female students and 0.4% of ASU male students reported that they experienced an attempted or completed sexual assault in the past year.” (http://asu.orgsync.com/org/alist/Sexual_Violence)  This is a big problem because there are so many more women and men that are actually being sexually assaulted. The shame involved in either being battered by or hurting someone we care for makes it hard to tell anyone, even those closest to us.   People in abusive relationships often work hard at making it seem as if nothing is wrong

This website is all about the rape information that has occurred on ASU campus.  It also has all the information about where to call if you get raped or even a help line for people that you think may have been raped and need help.  It provides you with details on what to do with the clothes your wearing when you’re raped.  The first thing you need to do is put all your clothes in a bag and take it to the hospital so they can searched your body for any and DNA or evidence to find their rapist.  This website is very helpful and all girls should now about it.  You don’t realize all the stuff you need to do if your raped, most girls would shower and never report it cause if they are in denial about it then it didn’t happen.  Which isn’t right, if you let him get away with rapping you, your giving him another shot to rape someone else.  If we made websites like these more available women may actually stand up for themselves and not be so afraid.

IB 3 Working Parents

Having two parents working outside of the home is a controversial issue for many people, especially for women.  Some believe that a woman should be able to pursue her career and not be expected to partake in the old-fashion customs of staying in the home.  Others believe that it is a mother’s duty to her children to stay at home with them.  Of course, childcare is not all the mother’s responsibility.  If the mother cannot, or chooses not to stay in the home, then the father is expected. Having one parent stay at home is a luxury that many Americans cannot afford.  When parent’s have children and cannot or do not stay home to care for them, there are many that are affected.
There are many reasons for both parents working outside of the home.  One is out of necessity.  So many Americans, especially in this tough economy, are struggling to make ends meet.  For them, having an able-bodied parent stay at home and care for the child or children is just not a practical option.  For some, both of the parents choose to work outside of the home.  Whether it be for less financial stress, more equality in the home, or the joys of their career.  Some families don’t have two parents and the one is forced to work.  “PRWORA and associated Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) programs provide strong incentives for low-income mothers to participate in the labor force even during their children's formative years” (Neighborhood Effects 1).  No matter the reason for no parent staying full-time in the home, there are many affected by these circumstances.
There are many stakeholders in the lives of parents who do not stay in the home. The most obvious one is the children.  There are many statistics on the effects of children not having a parent with them throughout the day.  Another stakeholder is childcare.  Because of these situations of parents not staying in the home, childcare providers have a business.  The schools that the children attend can also be forms of childcare.  Many schools, especially in poor areas provide before and after school care for children in these situations.  Extended family members can also be regularly affected.  These family members may be responsible for driving, helping, or caring for the children left at home.  Of course, parents are a stakeholder.  They have the responsibility to work and give their children quality attention and provide them with all the need, food, shelter, love, and potentially money for childcare.

Alex Chandler - Three Paragraphs

The film industry has a moral responsibility to the citizens of the USA that they have been abusing. Film producers, and everyone who forms the story line, and decides what is shown has some moral responsibility to the viewers, and in the case of American films, the citizens of the USA. It has become too widely accepted, and shown in film that illegal drug use is okay, consisting of all; underage drinking, marijuana, and drug use in general. Motion pictures have an impact on everyone, and when they contain this content showing it as okay, they are allowing addicts to believe it is okay, and others to become curious, to become the future addicts.
Many producers are indeed able to show improper morals in a way that motivates others to become better people. A more recent hit and example of this is by the film director Darren Aronofsky in his Requiem for a Dream (written by Hubert Selby Jr). This film will turn your insides outward, there are many scenes that will have you turning away from the movie screen, and by the end you will clap because of a job well done, but you will hope to your god that you never have to watch the film again. It is a powerful representation of how the portrayal of poor life choices should be shown in film: brutally honest.
YouTube sets a good example of a film policy rule. YouTube has guidelines for what can be uploaded and published to their site, and they do not allow anything illegal to be uploaded, otherwise it can be flagged and removed (they specifically state underage drinking, and illegal drug use). If this were a regulation implemented in the film industry it might seem slightly ridiculous to the ears of the modern generation growing up with the constant surrounding of these types of films. There would be appropriate exceptions, consisting of documentaries and educational films.

First Three Paragraphs on Childhood Obesity

One out of every three American children is obese (10). This number should be cause for shock. The past few years our nation has experienced a massive increase in not only the number of obese adults, but also in the number of obese children. According to the CDC, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity is measured using an individual’s body mass index, or BMI. Although this measurement does not directly measure body fat, it is a reasonable indicator of body fat (3). Based on the information available through the CDC, obesity is defined as, “a BMI at or above the 95th percentile for children of the same age and sex.” This large growth in the number of obese children in America has come to the attention of many organizations and individuals; people are finding ways to bring change to our nation and better the lives of our children.
The causes of childhood obesity are clear, poor eating habits and an unhealthy life style; in some cases obesity can be linked with genetic causes.  Children today are eating too many calories and not getting enough exercise, causing the pounds to pile up. The CDC has listed several causes for childhood, they are as follows; sugar drinks and less healthy foods on school campuses, advertising of less healthy foods, variation in licensure regulations among child care centers, lack of daily, quality physical activity in all schools, no safe and appealing place, in many communities, to play and be active, limited access to healthy ad affordable foods, greater availability of high-energy-dense foods and drinks, increasing portion sizes, and lastly television and media (3). These linked causes to childhood obesity have called concern into many organizations and individuals, bringing forth a reason for change.
There are several organizations and stakeholders that I have categorized by their motivations for change.  The first group I have identified are the ones who have recognized that this is a rapidly growing issue and are looking for ways to treat as well as prevent the growth of childhood obesity. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention plays a major role in recognizing what is and is not a potential risk to the nations health. It has recognized that obesity is becoming an increasing issue in our nation. The number of obese children in the United states has tripled in comparison to just one generation ago (3); these obese children will one day become adults and have to life with the consequences of their eating habits. The CDC has recognized several factors and causes of childhood obesity and it has become relevant to them that there need to be change. These children need to learn better eating habits, healthier lifestyles and have an overall system that promotes better health. The CDC encourages states and communities to find ways to change the eating habits of children and find ways to make their lives easier. Posted on their website, they have sizable lists of ways communities and states and parents can pursue change in their communities. The CDC is not directly involved in searching out a solution to the childhood obesity epidemic but they are at the forefront of encouragement and information for those who are looking for answers.

IB 2 ! put this under my other one!

There are many problems and positions when you think about date rape. Date rape is something that happens everywhere but I am mainly focusing on date rape at ASU. We think that date rape is all bad and it always bad and has to be the guy’s fault, but it’s not true most the time. We always look at date rape as t had to of happened and that the girl would have never said yes, but what if the girls was to drunk to realize she did say yes. When we are drunk we don’t always remember everything so we automatically think he raped me, I would have never said yes. But most the time this isn’t true. Most the time we did say yes we just don’t remember. This is definitely an example of valiant behavior because when you date rape someone you hurt them emotionally. We don’t think that it can truly affect someone but it completely does. It makes women completely change who they are and how they act. Which is really sad when people are drunk and claim rape because that night they probably said yes, but now are saying no and so scared of everything. I think girls need to think more about when they claim rape, and accuse someone of something like that especially when they don’t remember. I agree with everyone and think date rape is not okay, but I know as a student at ASU that a lot of girls get upset with themselves for having sex with some random kid so they claim it was date rape and wasn’t okay. This is a very big topic and they are always two sides because some people say that even if your drunk its not okay to have sec with them, but how are girls suppose to know if we are to drunk that we are blacked out so we can’t have sex. A lot of girls even when blacked out can function fine and you would never think they were drunk. I think this is a big topic and we need to hear and see all point of views.

Film Morales - Alex Chandler - IB2

One position that can be taken is that the film industry has caused poor moralsto become prevelant in society. While the opposing position would be that film is conveying what already exists in society and adding a dramatic story or scene to it. Another position that could be taken is that film allows for people already caught in a poor moral habbit to justify their actions and continue onward. While the opposing view is that film does not try to promote bad morals, and people need to think for themselves.

All of these positions do form conjecture, and they all have some basis of justification, possibly examples to help back them up. Simply but, yes conjecture is there. This means that all sides have a good basis of argument, and can have a worthy debate to see who is right. I personally have my own opinion, and am interested in further researching the opposing views.

Working Parents--IB2

Positions:

I haven't exactly chosen a specific position to take on working parents but I think that there are many sides you could take on this subject.

a.  General statistics on the difference between having both parents working or having at least one stay-at-home parent.
b. How is children's behavior when both parents work away from home?
c. Are the majority of parents working outside the home doing it for necessity or desire?

Conjecture: The situation of parents working full time with children at home.
Definition: When children are home without a parent there to care for them because of work.
Value: The value is based on how not having a parent at home full time to care for them can affect a child.
Policy: Encourage parents who have the means to stay at home and care for children.

I need to do research on the affects of parents working when children are home without quality time with parents can have on a family.  There are so many positions on this topic, I need to narrow it down by doing research on the most populare and interesting topics.  I will need statistical evidence to support my claim.

CHILDHOOD OBESITY AND HOW IT RELATES TO SOCIOECONOMIC FACTORS:

When looking at possible sides and positions to take, it was important for me to try and angle out what each stakeholder may have interest and concern in. Doctors for example will probably be in the position of treatment and lowering the child's obesity, where as families from the beginning may have a position of prevention. Hospitals would be the same position as doctors; they may be able to supply information on prevention of obesity, but typically they deal with "in the moment" patients. for them they will be looking at ways to slow or decrease the child's obesity rather than prevent it. Schools as well as programs such as Nickelodeon will come from a point of prevention and encouragement at a healthy life style; they are slowing the growth of obesity and they are also trying to promote healthy lifestyles. The CDC will be looking for causes of obesity and they will be in a position focused on prevention. the stakeholder that can be though to decide on what position they will take, is food companies. During my research I may have to break this group up and look at how poor diet companies(those who sell "junk food") are taking a claim in this issue and how healthier food companies are trying to promote healthier lifestyles through their foods. Either way these are difficult because they are still both coming from a position of business and corporate standings.
In relation to researching each position, I think I will look at which are looking at childhood obesity from a position of prevention, which are looking at it from a position of treatment, and which are looking at it from a research and solution position.

Childhood Obesity

Childhood Obesity-
Stakeholders-
Doctors- specifically pediatricians- these are of great importance because they are their patients

Families- Their life style or genetic disposition plays a major role

Schools- Schools have to find alternatives for better food choices and encourage activity

Nickelodeons- Get Out and Play Worldwide Day of Play- an encouragement for kids to be outside

Hospitals- Some children end up with Type 2 Diabetes and become regular patients

CDC- They have to recognize that this is a growing problem and be a part of prevention

Advertising Companies- they have to find a way to target children: either to encourage better eating habits or find ways to discreetly encourage poor eating habits that endorse their food.

Food Companies- their products may or may not be effecting the children directly but the junk food companies want business while more nutritional companies want to see a healthier population- and business.

RESEARCH
Major Organizations and People that are fighting to stop childhood obesity are:
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation- they have several priorities for putting a stop to this growth including, "Ensuring that all foods and beverages served and sold in schools meet or exceed the most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans." (rwjf.org)
Michelle Obama- she currently has an Anti-Childhood Obesity Plan. She hopes in doing so it will put and end to this generations weight problems.
WHO- World Health Organization is looking for answers and ways for fight this epidemic.
CNN reported that the “Biggest Loser” Television show is to tackle childhood obesity next year.
ABC News reported that the GREEN Party has announced a $5 Million dollar plan to tackle childhood obesity.  They plan to use that money to improve school health foods. Personally I think the issue is not what they are serving in school but what is being done at home. These are just a few of the major stakeholders I have found so far and it seems as though they are mostly focused on finding a way in the school system but not looking at the bigger picture. I think we have to take a look at what ingredients people are consuming in their foods and the price of healthy food versus junk food. The New York Times as well as USA Today did articles on whether or not healthy food is more expensive than junk food, and as it turns out, they are relatively the same. So then, what is it that is causing such a huge obesity epidemic? That is one of the questions I hope to answer very soon.

Working Parents

1.) Stakeholders
Children: If childrens' parents work then they would be affected the most.  Whether it be they get into more trouble, or they just miss out in spending time with their parents.
Parents: They have the responsibility to work and give their children quality attention and provide them with all the need, food, shelter, love, etc.
Schools: Depending on the child's situation or area, schools may provide before and after school activities.
Extended family members: May have to babysit or take care of children on a regular basis, or when help is needed.
Friends: Children may see too much of friends or not enough due to their parent's work schedule
Childcare: Childcare facilities are in business due to working parents.
Neighborhoods: If children are left alone during the day, neighborhoods could potentially be affected negatively.

2.) Research

  • American Academy of Pediatrics
    • Pros of two working parents
      • less financial stress
      • more equality in the home
  • Washington Post
    • Rick Santorum
      • This is a result, he wrote, of “radical feminism’s misogynistic crusade to make working outside the home the only marker of social value and self-respect.’’
      • He believes that most women work outside the home to find personal enjoyment and fulfillment
      • He doesn't believe that this is morally right
    • Me
      • I hope that the reason that both parents are working outside of the home is due to need.
      • Having children is a selfless act, but it doesn't stop there
      • It makes me sad that parents can't find joy or fulfillment being stay-at-home.
3.) Coversation
--At the dinner party about stay-at-home and working parents i'm sure there would be plenty of arguments.  Certain people on both sides have very strong opinions.  Honestly, no one wants to be told that what they are doing is wrong, or unneccessary.  The people might talk about ways to collaborate together in helping the children in their communities.  Hopefully the people would go into the conversation not with the attitude of changing the other party, but helping them and do whatever is best for the children.

Date rape with in college campus!

My topic for the assignment is going to be date rape within college campuses.  I think this is a huge topic to all of us college students.  There are a lot of different point of views when it comes to this topic.    Especially when either alcohol or drugs are involved.  We hear a lot about how so many girls or women claim to have been date rapped or rapped, but a big question we have to ask ourselves is was drugs or alcohol involved.  This to me is a touchy subject because so many girls calm to have been date rapped because they don't remember anything.  Which a lot of the time means they drank to much and blacked out a had sex with the guy.  When in reality the guy could have been just as drunk as the girl was.  But ill safe the rest of the debate for my paper.  What we need to first learn about our the stake holders involved in this topic.

My stake holders would be male or female college students, campus police, drugs use, alcohol industry, facility, and most important sorority and fraternity relations.  First college females and males because they need to be aware of what is going on around them and what can happened to them.  They need to understand the effects and the punishments to these crimes.  Campus police is a direct stake holder because they are the first notified and who have to take matters into their own hands on whether our not  its a real crime and the extend of the punishment.  They decide if it needs to be sent to higher or power and they have to make a good report so everyone knows what happened.  The drug industry is a big one because most the time people are date rapped its by using drugs.  If we are more aware of it, then the drugs money and the amount of drugs are going to go up because more people will no about it.  But on the other hand it could go down because police are getting better at catching these crimes so they will slowly decrease.  This goes the same way with the alcohol industry because it is effected in the same way as the drug industry, expect people could go as far as trying to sew them for what has happened.  The other one that is big is the facility because of what they have to do to students who get caught being in a crime of date rap.  The may to expel students because of these actions.  All the stake holders are very important in date rape and it effects all of them.  Especially when it happens as often as it does.  A lot of date raps go un reported because of how embarrassing it can be, hopefully this will help girls and guys the courage to report them.

All these stake holders should get together for dinner and see how much they have in common with this issue.  They would be shocked on how much the would have to talk about and they would agree on.  But on the other hand they would dis agree and have a lot of arguments as well.

Alex Chandler Vexed By Social Media

A brief on my topic so we can discuss stakeholders. I'm specifically focusing on the moral responsibility to the citizens of the USA that the film industry has, or should be more in charge of. That being said my position is that film producers, and everyone who forms the story line, and decides what is shown has some moral responsibility to the viewers, and in the case of American films, the citizens of the USA. It has become too widely accepted, and shown in film that illegal drug use is okay, this covers everything (underage drinking, marijuana, drugs in general). These sort of motion pictures have an impact on everyone.
The stake holders; film industry, drug trade, police, US citizens, teachers, parents, and surely more. The film industry has an entire ideology to change, they would have to change their mindset. Much like when tobacco companies were no longer allowed to pay for product placement - and yet 87% of top box office films in the past decade showed smoking, (CMCH). So they have monetary gain to loose. The drug trade is a stake holder because they are directly affected when the drug demand starts to go down, one big one is the marijuana coming over the Mexican border. The police would like this because it would lessen the amount of illegal partying, drunk drivers, and much more that they have to investigate and fill out paperwork for. US citizens will be all over the board on this one, because if they do drugs they like seeing that media accepts it as an okay action in society, so they can go on feeling good about themselves. And those who are against it, or have had to be surrounded by the pain the drugs have caused in their lives will be for it as to hopefully save lives, and keep others from feeling the pain they may have gone through. Teachers would probably like their students to actually be mentally present in class, rather than floating off in space, or dealing with a serious headache, and that goes for all teachers starting in middle school and upward. Parents more than likely care enough about their offspring that they would prefer them not to be infected by images of drug use. And maybe even feel safe enough to put a TV in their child's room without worrying what might be in that G rated movie they haven't seen (one fourth of G rated films in the last decade contained smoking), (CMCH).
If representatives from all of these stakeholders came together for a dinner there would be all sorts of clamor. Some would quickly agree with each other, and others would start up in arguing immediately, and some might argue within their own stakeholder representation. The biggest argument for drugs to be shown in films is that of free speech, and that's what film companies, drug traders, and some citizens would argue. While others would argue about the mortality, and in the end one agreement they may come to, would be not to allow for paid advertising of drug use to be shown in films, but that would only be the beginning of the battle against it, and no one would go home happy.
